Dress Code and Prohibited Items

In order to maintain order and to uphold the security, dignity and decorum of the court, the following dress code is applicable to all persons entering the courtroom of the Hanover General District Court.

Clothing shall be neat and clean without rips and tears. Shirts shall completely cover stomach area to belt line. The following shall NOT be worn in the courtroom: No exposed underwear, tube tops, halter necks, cut-off jeans or slacks, short shorts, shirts without sleeves (men), sunglasses, spaghetti straps, head gear of any kind (except items worn for religious or medical reasons).

The following are prohibited: pagers, video cameras, cellular telephones, voice recorders of any kind, reading of newspapers, magazines & books. Law Enforcement and officers of the court may keep pagers, cellular telephone and voice recorders on vibrate only.

Any deviation from this policy must first be approved on a case-by-case basis by the Judge.

Criminal and traffic cases must be submitted to the Commonwealth’s Attorney for approval. Civil cases need the signatures of all parties involved. All continuance requests must be approved by the Judge.
